Things to Do in San Antonio During Graduation Week

Graduation week isn't a vacation — ceremony times and return curfews come first. The best activities are the ones that fit comfortably into your Town Pass window without a stressful drive back to Lackland. Visit San Antonio, the city's official destination organization, also maintains a BMT Graduate Family Pass program for discounted local attractions — check the official page for current availability before you travel.

Short on time? Stay close.

  • San Antonio River Walk — a 15-mile corridor; for graduation week, pick one section (Downtown is easiest) rather than the whole thing.
  • The Alamo — free admission, but a timed-entry ticket is required for the Church. Reserve ahead, especially during peak graduation weeks.
  • The Pearl — restaurants and open space for a relaxed family meal without a rigid itinerary.

Have half a day?

  • San Antonio Zoo — good for kids and multigenerational groups; budget time for parking and heat.
  • The DoSeum — an air-conditioned, hands-on option if you're traveling with younger children.

Save these for Friday or an extra day

SeaWorld San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and Natural Bridge Caverns are all worth the trip — but they're hard to fit safely into a Wednesday or Thursday Town Pass window with a same-day base return. Save the full-day attractions for a day without a curfew.

Group Lodging for BMT Graduation Families

Graduation often brings parents, grandparents, siblings, and close family friends together — more than a single hotel room can comfortably hold. Both Blue Star properties are 3-bedroom homes that sleep 6, and families can book both homes together for up to 12 guests, subject to availability.

Booking both homes helps when grandparents need a quieter space, multiple family branches are traveling together, or the group just wants two kitchens and more bathrooms without splitting up across unrelated hotels. The two homes aren't on the same lot, but they're minutes apart and both sit inside Loop 1604.

After weeks of training, most Airmen want simple things during Town Pass: a home-cooked meal, a comfortable couch, and quiet time with family. Both properties' stocked kitchens and shared living areas make that possible without a restaurant reservation.

Graduation Day FAQs

How many guests can I bring, and do I need a visitor pass?

Each trainee may invite up to six guests age 18 or older who need access to the installation. Children under 18 may accompany a parent or guardian and do not need a separate visitor pass. Guests with a valid DoD ID do not need a visitor pass. Other adult guests must bring their installation visitor pass and a Real ID compliant ID or other accepted identification, such as a passport.

Is there a dress code for BMT graduation?

There is no formal dress code, but guests should wear appropriate clothing for a family military event. Most graduation activities are outdoors, so comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing are recommended. Severe weather may change ceremony locations or visitor access, so check official BMT updates before leaving.

Where do I park for BMT graduation?

Visitors are directed to one of three primary parking lots near the Pfingston Reception Center. Wednesday events take place at the reception center. For Thursday's parade, guests walk across the Truemper Street Bridge or pedestrian walkway to reach the parade grounds. Handicap parking is available with a valid permit.

Can I take photos or video during graduation?

The official BMT website does not publish a specific personal camera policy for guests. Follow all posted instructions and directions from BMT staff while on the installation. Official photos are available through the Aim High app and Gateway Wing Flickr account.

How long is the graduation ceremony?

The Thursday Graduation Parade begins at 9:00 a.m. and normally ends at approximately 9:30 a.m. The current schedule lists Town Pass beginning at 10:00 a.m., so plan to remain at the parade area through approximately 10:00 a.m. Allow additional time for entering the base, parking, and walking to the parade grounds.
